WP2

Harmonisation of skid-resistance methods and choice of reference surfaces

This work-package is a continuation of the project HERMES. The main aim of WP2 is to define a strategy for moving towards a European test method involving the use of one single friction device and reference surfaces. Outside technical specifications, it is important to see how to manage the transition period with local (national) devices. A scheme of the working program is shown in Figure 1.

Task 2.1 reviews existing skid-resistance test methods and report what we learned from previous harmonisation projects. Actions will be focused on specifications for a reference friction device and the correlation procedure between local and reference devices.

Task 2.2 reviews current practices regarding the use of reference surfaces. Specifications for reference-surface characteristics and alternatives to built surfaces are the main objectives of this task.

Task 2.3 is a synthesis of the two previous ones. Implementation plan will be set out to reach the harmonisation objective in 2020. Special attention will be paid to intermediate steps in 2010 and 2015 to have a smooth transition for individual countries.

Task 2.4 enhances exchanges between partners and experts as well as stakeholders. Meetings will be organised regularly to keep a close cooperation between various actors.
